Squirrel!

It obviously comes as no shock that I am a first time mom to a humanoid. I do like to think of myself as a rather experienced mom to furballs that have not all been that quick on the draw, if you know what I mean. I’ve loved all my furbabies and all of their quirks. Being a first time humanoid mom that is now nearly 15 months in, I cannot help but compare furbabies and non-furry babies.

Judge me as you will but up until recently, aside from the occasional snuggle and giggle, having a child has been like having a seriously seriously needy puppy. They really don’t understand you very much but just know that they love you with a mystical force imprinted on the both of you. I’m sure it has something to do with keeping them fed and clean, but I just know with all the rainbows and unicorns in the universe there is something more mysterious involved as well. Anyway, I say all of this with the disclaimer “up until this point” because oh the tides they are a turning.

She gets it. I’m not sure yet what “it” is, but you can see the wheels turning and the actual comprehension of things going on inside that large dome sitting atop her tiny body. If you ask her to come here or not touch something or to get her shoe/sock/block/cup/etc., she knows exactly what you are saying. And sometimes, just sometimes, she actually does what you ask! She’s responding to play and things that are funny and games and while all of this is very similar to teaching a dog to play fetch, I can see she actually understands the words that are coming out of my mouth. I feel like I now at least have a human version of Dug from the movie UP.

Adorable, well intentioned, loving, and completely easily distracted in the sweetest most curious way.

Now if only I could find one of those collars for Lil and Lou…
