It happened. I can't believe it myself. We now are proud parents of an excruciatingly adorable little girl. In a not so brief but sort of brief summary of how things went down, I give you one crazy week.
So last Tuesday I had my 38/39 week check up and the swelling, headaches, and dizziness had reached a pretty sweet high. After being in the hospital the previous Friday for observation due to the BP, they sent me home to see what they would say at my Tuesday check up. What they said was "We're going to induce you. Tonight. At 11pm. Tomorrow we'll have a baby and all should be well again." We were prepared with "go-bags" and had time to get the dogs to the kennel. Once we got them to the kennel we had about 4 more hours to kill before we had to be at the hospital. What better way to spend it then with friends at a new brew house in town? It seems super odd but it was seriously the best thing we could have done because I think otherwise we would have been climbing the walls and freaking each other out.
So we get to the hospital and they tell me that they are going to give me a pill of Miso-something to soften my cervix and then in four hours they are going to give me another one. Then they are going to kick start things and hook me up to the Pitocin. It really wasn't a big deal to me because although they said I was having contractions, I really only felt like I was having menstrual cramps so it was totally doable and sleep throughable. The first plan deviation came when they went to check my vitals after being on the Pitocin for about 2 hours. They were checking overall progress after I had been able to sleep for a while when I had to have them wait because I had this crazy urge that I had to pee. Lucky for me, hubby, and the nursing staff I barely made it to the bathroom and my water broke. And broke. And broke. I got back and everything was good and we were all super excited until they took my temperature and we found out that I had a fever. So lucky me ended up getting an infection and had to be put on antibiotics as well as the labor inducing drip. Who knows why or how, but once my water broke I ended up at 4cm for 4 hours and then jumped to 8cm.
They took my vitals again some time later (about 10pm-ish on Wednesday) and we were finally ready. All systems go... or so we thought. The monitor they had me hooked up to that charted my contractions only charted when they were occurring and not the strength of them, as well as the baby's heartbeat. So they saw that I was having contractions and told me that it would be best for me to start pushing... about midnight. After trying as hard as I could to stick it out without the epidural, I gave into the wonder of modern medicine and got relief from the rapidly increasing in strength contractions. During which we decided that a funny movie would be best so we popped in Step Brothers. A movie I highly recommend to keep your spirits up no matter how many times you've seen it. Three hours of pushing later, the doc came in and determined that we needed an internal contraction monitor so that we could tell how strong these puppies were because they were obviously not providing me with any help in pushing this kid out. After two hours of rest and an internal contraction monitor later they wanted me to start pushing again. At this point, it is now Thursday morning around 9am.
I start pushing and make much better progress and then things are stalled again. The doc comes in and examines the position of the head and tells us that she has started decending with her head crooked and that we will need to use the vacuum and then more than likely end up in a C-Section. After being so exhausted I sort of lost it. The idea of them using a vacuum scared me as much as the idea of having to have forceps and I cried. Determined that I didn't want a C-Section either, our nurse was super supportive and said that we would try and push for a little while longer when the doc would come in and double check on us before her scheduled surgery with another patient. The nurse we had was so amazing and she kept us positive and focused and sure enough the baby wiggled just the right way that within about 20 minutes she was born. When the doc came in to check on us before her scheduled surgery she was so shocked at how far along I was she quickly gowned up and very shortly thereafter we had our little girl.
Thursday morning at 10:08am Lyla was born. She came out with a full head of hair and hardly making a peep even though she was/is healthy. After the first night she ended up being a little bit jaundiced but they were keeping an eye on it instead of acting because she was doing so well feeding and pooping. So by now they are telling us that we can go home Saturday, after being in the hospital since Tuesday night, and that they had to keep us that extra day because I had an infection and they needed to make sure that Lyla and I were both okay to go home. We were fine but the jaundice was measuring in at borderline treatment level. Sunday morning comes and the pediatric hospitalist would not give us a legit recommendation on if we should stay and extra night and put her under the light therapy or if we should take the chance and go home and come back the next day to have her levels taken. It was seriously starting to piss me off how this doctor left everything up to us. Parents of all of barely 48 hours. We had to wait forever for my meds and ended up saying that it just made sense to keep her there for the night with light therapy. Light therapy was torture for her and for us. Given the do-over, I would have just taken her home.
She is home now and for the most part happy. We have managed to realize how important the feeding schedule is and she seems happier for it. She really is a good baby and we are lucky parents so far. Follow up doctor appointment for Lyla tomorrow and hopefully they'll say how great she is too.
I'm healing up as much as anyone can after only a week but feeling better every day. I went into the hospital at 209lbs last Tuesday and weighed in today at 175. 34 pounds in just over a week helps ya feel better real fast too. :)
